When I visit my client's homes the second most important thing to review is their bedroom (first, it's the front door!). We spend roughly one-third of our lives in this room and it is our most intimate space; a place for rest, rejuvenation, and healing.
I've written a lot about beds and feng shui. Why? Because so many of us do not sleep well at night and our beds have a lot to do with it!
Sometimes sleep is disturbed by anxiety. So, what might be behind this feeling of dread?
Interesting that we might overlook something that over-looks us! What is above your bed?
Tip #1: Artwork
Look at the artwork there (if you have any). Does it feel peaceful, light and spacious, or noisy and heavy?
Tip #2: Objects
Do you have a shelf or other objects hanging above your bed? One client had this shelf with beautiful items above her toddlers bed. Her child was having trouble sleeping. My suggestion? Remove the shelving!
One client is in a small NYC apartment and has shelving along the side of the bed. He needs the storage space, so my suggestion was to make it more serene by using baskets for storage and removing the printer (yes, he had his printer on a shelf - half hanging off!). The printer is heavy and scary (adding to anxiety) to have hanging over your bed!
Tip #3: Furniture
Perhaps the artwork is fine and you don't have any objects hanging over your head, but wait! Do you have a tall dresser or other piece of furniture next to your bed? It may be close enough to feel oppressive and threatening.
If you have any of these issues, I suggest moving your room around and observe your sleep. It may be all you need to get better rest!
