I have real affection for the trees in my life. The trees that line my property, the trees of my everyday life and my childhood. Why? It goes beyond the utilitarian and aesthetic reasons.
Trees have soul, don't they? You can FEEL it. Trees make you feel good. When I was a little girl, whenever I was upset I'm climb up my favorite tree and watch everything from above. I'd hug the tree and it would make me feel better.
The Japanese have a tradition called "forest bathing" aka taking a walk in the woods. They understand the benefits of being in nature and getting that intangible sense of peace. The trees are doing their job of bringing us back into balance in their own way.
Remember that scene in Lord of the Rings? You know the one I'm talking about. I never read the series before, so that scene really blew me away. The trees awakened to help human beings combat evil!
How could anyone take a chainsaw to the old-growth redwoods and sequoias. Julia Butterfly Hill awakened me to the threat that these beautiful trees still undergo.
And I know I'm not the only tree-nerd. You have a little tree-nerd in you too! Find that inner "tree-nerd" in you today and tell me how it goes!
