I started my New Year by cleaning out my refrigerator. Dumping expired food, cleaning out jars and containers for recycling, clearing up vegie remnants of the organic farm share we get every year, and organizing what was left.
Sounds like fun, right? Strangely enough it was energizing and felt appropriate – clearing the old to make way for new energy to nourish my family. Even two days later, it’s still a pleasure to open the fridge.
But cleaning out your fridge isn’t the only way to prepare for this new year.
I did my first energetic space clearing for a client on January 2nd. How appropriate, I thought. How wonderful to start the new year with great, positive energy. To help her and her children to achieve their new goals and intentions for relationships, career and health!
Initially she called because of predecessor spirit energy that was lingering in her home for years. Her daughter had a jarring experience last week and she finally decided to call – to lay this all “to rest,” so to speak.
But while we were walking through the home, loosening up the negative energy and connecting with that spirit, she realized why she really needed to do this…now. About 6 months ago, she broke up from a long-term relationship and realized now that this clearing would remove the past experiences from that relationship and help her make way for a new one!
So if you would like to do a space clearing for your home, here are a few guidelines.
Space Clearing Guidelines
(just a few thoughts – not the be-all and end-all of space clearing!)
Create a simple altar. I like to include a symbol of each of the 5 elements – fire, earth, water, metal and wood (flowers). I usually use the flowers as a beautiful offering.
Light the candle, say a prayer and ask for assistance from the Divine – for instance, God, Buddha, Jesus, the archangels, your spirit guides, and any loved ones who have passed over that would like to participate for your highest good.
There are many ways to actually perform the space clearing. All suggest that you open windows and doors, at least a crack, to facilitate the exit of negative energy. You can use sound. I use Sanskrit mantras and prayer, as well as bells. You can also use incense (such as sage, which is called “smudging”), or even just powerful visualization. I always go to the front door first, state my intention, get a response (if you’re not comfortable with knowing a yes or a no, just let your intuition guide you). If okay, then circle around your home in clockwise direction, making sure to go through each room, each corner in the room, open closets, even the garage, and the basement. Do each floor.
When you are done, go back to the altar and visualize all the negative energy that was stirred up goes out the doors and windows of your home. Wash your hands and arms well with warm soapy water, up to your elbows. This will remove any negative energy that you picked up in the process.
Now, you will need to bless the home. Do the same circuit around your home and visualize white light with all your intentions and goals for the year, filling every crevice of the space. I like to use light, high-pitch bells for this process.
Lastly, and most importantly, return to the altar and give thanks to the Divine light and helpers that participated and “give” them the offering. When you are done, blow out the candle.
