A while back I was contacted by the owners of a hair salon business. They were going through a huge shift in their business. Once part owner with another family member, the couple decided to buy out the business and start fresh. They called me in to help them improve the feng shui of their space.
The exterior and interior of their space was really needing a feng shui overhaul and they decided to do a complete renovation - and do it as eco-friendly as possible (View before and after slides of their space here.)
But what about the name?
With my background in marketing and my knowledge of chi, I asked them about the name of their business, Cove 7 Salon.
It was interesting to find out that they purchased the salon and the kept the name from the previous owners about 10 years prior!
Something that I always take into account in my consultations is predecessor chi - that is, the energy of those that inhabited that space before my client. The same goes with a business name.
- What was the chi of the business before they purchased?
- What is the current chi of the business with this name?
- How is this business perceived by the local community?
It was clear that neither the previous owners nor my current clients had invested in the space for years. The exterior had a stained, sun-bleached awning, rotted wood ramps (why the ramps???) and overgrown weeds flanking the entry. The interior had mismatched furnishings and the addition of non-related merchandise gave an indication that the business was unsteady and floundering.
The salon needed a major lift in chi!
Now that my clients owned the business 100% they would be able to place their mark and this would be a perfect time to change the name!
They were excited and we did a brainstorm with the staff on words that might convey the new salon we were creating: a restorative, eco-friendly space that was modern and stylish. They soon renamed their salon to Arame Salon & Spa, and after the renovations, they became an Aveda salon.
Ten years later, this is a thriving business and a steady feng shui client.
What does your business name say about you? If it's confusing, hard to pronounce or spell, or does not reflect what you offer, it may be time for a feng shui overhaul!
